Caustic Soda (NaOH) Optimization in Gold Processing: pH Control, Elution Kinetics & Safety

Technical guidelines for optimizing sodium hydroxide dosing across cyanidation circuits, Zadra and AARL carbon elution columns, and electrowinning cells to prevent hydrogen cyanide volatilization and lower chemical OPEX.

Sodium Hydroxide (Caustic Soda, NaOH) is one of the highest-volume hydrometallurgical reagents consumed in contemporary gold and silver recovery circuits. Across carbon-in-pulp (CIP), carbon-in-leach (CIL), and atmospheric heap leaching operations, caustic soda serves as the primary alkaline regulator maintaining slurry pH above 10.5. This alkaline protective buffer is stoichiometrically mandatory: if the slurry pH drops below 9.2, active cyanide ions rapidly hydrolyze into deadly, volatile hydrogen cyanide gas (HCN), resulting in hazardous atmospheric concentrations and catastrophic cyanide reagent consumption.

In carbon elution (stripping) circuits, caustic soda dosing directly dictates gold recovery efficiency and cycle turnaround times. In Anglo American Research Laboratory (AARL) elution regimens, loaded carbon is pre-soaked in a concentrated solution of 1.0%–2.0% NaOH and 2.0%–3.0% NaCN at 90°C to 110°C before deionized water eluent elution. In Zadra stripping circuits, a continuous recirculation of 1.0% NaOH and 0.1%–0.2% NaCN at 120°C to 140°C drives gold dicyanoaurate complexes off the carbon pores into the pregnant electrolyte. Maintaining tight caustic concentration thresholds ensures high electrical conductivity in downstream electrowinning cells, preventing anode passivation and ensuring dense, high-grade gold sludge deposition on steel-wool cathodes.

However, excessive caustic soda dosing introduces severe operational drawbacks. Over-alkalization leads to carbonate scale precipitation (CaCO3) when processing hard water, blinding activated carbon pores and degrading carbon adsorption kinetics in subsequent absorption cycles. Furthermore, over-dosing caustic significantly escalates mill operating expenditures (OPEX) and increases downstream acid consumption during carbon acid-washing stages. Continuous automated pH titrators coupled with inline conductivity probes allow mill metallurgists to optimize caustic dosing to within ±0.2 pH units, reducing reagent waste by 12% to 18%.

From a supply chain standpoint, African mine sites must evaluate whether to import 99% solid caustic soda flakes or pearls in 25 kg bags/bulk bags versus liquid caustic lye (48%–50% NaOH) in ISO tank containers. While liquid lye eliminates hazardous dust inhalation during site dissolving, importing solid caustic flakes in sealed moisture-proof bags significantly reduces maritime freight weight and provides 24-month shelf life stability across humid tropical corridor warehouses.
